3 Easy Improvements For SEO

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) has many layers and can take time to come to grips with. But here are 3 easy improvements you can make to up your SEO game:

1. Interlinking and External Links

SEO is about making the user experience a good one, and ensuring that they can find the information they are looking for. Therefore interlinking useful and related content is a must, as well as ensuring helpful and authoritative external content is used contextually within your articles.

Interlinking

Interlinking between your content is a great easy way to improve your SEO. It not only shows Google that you are an authority on the broader topic, but it also ensures that visitors stay on your site longer by giving them lots of useful content that is connected.

Aim for at least 3 relevant and contextual internal links per post.

External Linking

It may seem counter intuitive to link to external sites, but it actually aids your SEO. High quality, authoritative and contextual outbound linking helps to show that you are adding value for your visitors. You are providing information with your authoritative content, and for subjects that you refer to but that aren’t covered in your own content, you are linking to good quality external sources, proving to be informative.

Only link to trusted, authoritative, high ranking external sites – do not link to low ranking, badly designed, or out of date information.

2. The Importance of URLs

This tip is two-fold. Firstly, make sure your URLs are all working and that you have no ‘dead links’ or posts that are no longer live or working. If you have errors, set up a redirect or fix the issue. There’s nothing worse for a user than to follow a link to a dead page.

Secondly, set up your static page structure with a clear picture of your site’s purpose (and utilise keywords within this structure). The taxonomy should be simple, easy to follow and with simple URLs. Your post URLs should be kept simple too. If possible, set them up from the get-go as pagename/title-of-post, and avoid dates and too many bitty connecting words.

You should also keep your URLs to their simplest form, while taking into account your keywords and phrases = YourSite.com/how-to-lay-carpet, instead of YourSite.com/2021/12/this-is-how-to-lay-carpet-in-the-back-hallway/

3. Header Tags & Headings

Using headings and utilising the correct header tag hierarchy is a very simple but very easy way to improve your SEO. Headings not only help break up your content for readers, but they also help Google to index it correctly and to help sort your site for ranking. Think of them like your table of contents for readers (incidentally, your header tags are what TOCs draw from).

Your H1 title is your post title – this is automatically assigned. Your H2 tag header is the next font size down, and hierarchically should come after your blog post title.

For instance, in this post:

  • My H1 title is: 3 Easy Improvements For SEO and Google Rankings
  • H2 titles are things like: Interlinking and External Links
  • My H3 titles are sub-categories of that H2 header, such as: Interlinking, External Links
  • H4 titles would be for headings below and relating to my H3 headers.

By breaking your content into blocks of digestible sections, users can not only take in your information easier, they can also skip to the section that is most relevant for them. Remember, SEO is about providing the answers that meet user intent. Keep that in your mind, and remember, don’t overthink it!
