Interlinking – How to Keep Your Audience on Your Site Longer

You want your website to be user-friendly, interesting, and engaging – right? You also want people to be able to find the wealth of information you have created. Interlinking between relevant content also has a knock-on effect, as it helps search engines to crawl your site and determine authority; and thus keyword rank also.

What does interlinking mean?

Interlinking is the process of linking between your pages and content on your website. This can be done via in-text links (adding a URL to words you have written), having calls to action and highlighted visual punctuations within your content that are live links; and also having related posts listed (either manually or via a plugin).

Simply put, you want to make it easy for your readers to find all the related content on your site; and you want to show search engines how much wonderful related content (and authority) you have on a subject.

In-text Interlinking

One of the simplest things you can do when you are writing your content (or getting content written for you by us), is to interlink when you refer to a subject you have previously written about; or to a product in your shop. Simply highlight the referring word or phrase (as I did above), and link to the relevant article.

Calls to Action / Visual Punctuations

If you have a shop, inserting related products between paragraphs of text is a great way to break up the content AND show your audience where to look to find what they need.

If you want people to join your newsletter, or buy a certain item, a visual punctuation is a great way to flag it. There are plugins you can use, or you could manually create and insert a reusable block in WordPress for this.

There are some great plugins out there that will automatically insert related content (similar tags or categories) throughout or at the end of your posts. Jetpack has generated the one at the bottom of this post.

Please get in touch if you would like this function on your website; or would like any advice about interlinking and how it can help make a better over all user experience. Plus help keep users on your site and increase your rankings.
