What is Passage Indexing in SEO?

In a recent algorithm update, Google introduced a thing called ‘Passage Indexing’. Don’t panic, it isn’t a major shake up of the algorithms… it is just a tweak from Google to help deliver the best content in it’s SERPs.

What is Passage Indexing?

In simple terms, Passage Indexing is a feature which allows Google to index passages of your content into search results, even if the over all page or article isn’t solely on that topic.

For instance, if you have an article on the “best things to do in London”, and your paragraph on a “London riverboat cruise” is a great concise and informative passage, then this may be indexed and delivered as a search result. It is essentially a push further towards quality content indexing and delivering targeted results for searchers.

It also adds value from a rankings perspective, because even if you don’t have a whole post about London river cruises, you could potentially still be indexed and ranked for it. So concentrate on quality and informative content, even down to the paragraphs!

Algorithm updates from Google can send the fear into any website owner, but there are often opportunities for growth too. It’s usually not nearly as scary as some would have you believe, and the positive impacts are usually felt in the long run.

Quality content, above board SEO techniques and a user-first ethos all remain at the forefront of SEO and passage indexing updates.
