If you are looking to expand your website security, here are the top security plugins (third party) currently popular on WordPress.

1. Wordfence

Wordfence has over 4 million active users on WordPress. With firewall, two-factor authentication, and a swathe of security features, Wordfence offers a comprehensive offering. With both free and premium versions, it has ok coverage in the free service.

Like with any third-party plugin, not all plugins work with every theme or configuration of website. There are recent reports of the free version being a little laggy, but this could just be incompatibility issues.

2. All-in-One Security

All-in-One is the same company that brought you Updraft and AIOSEO, so a developer with some clout. It has an impressive offering on the free version, with spam protection and firewall etc., in an easy to use layout.

There have been some reports of it being buggy, especially with WooCommerce.

3. Jetpack

Jetpack is an all-in-one type solution – a generalist in the security world. It has CDN, spam protection and malware scanning.

With this multi-protection style of security, it does mean that the plugin is bulky. It may be a good option for starter sites, but may not provide the best of each service.

4. WP Cerber

While the interface of WP Cerber isn’t quite as clear and easy as some of the others, it has a really good free offering. With geo-protection, anti-spam, and malicious attack alerts, it offers some great protection.

Some of the user-panels take a while to get used to, so a web-developer may be required to set it up.

5. Sucuri

Sucuri was the go-to malware protection for years. Their notification system is a good one, so you can be alerted to any issues.

It was recently sold to GoDaddy to be their dedicated security plugin, so we’ll see how that changeover impacts the plugin.
