What is an SSL Certificate?

Have you ever seen reference to an SSL certificate? A Secure Sockets Layer is a standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a server and a client. Typically this is between a web server (website) and a browser, or a mail server and a mail client. This link ensures that all data transmitted between the web server and browsers remain private.

How do I know a site has an SSL?

When a website is secured by SSL, the URL begins with “https://” rather than “https://”, and a padlock icon is displayed in the browser’s address bar. This indicates to users that their connection is secure.

What does the SSL process look like?

  • The Handshake – When a browser attempts to connect to an SSL-secured website, the browser and server establish a connection using a process called the SSL handshake. This involves exchanging encryption keys and verifying the server’s SSL certificate, which is issued by a trusted Certificate Authority.
  • Encryption – Once the handshake is complete, data transferred between the browser and server is encrypted, making it unreadable to unauthorised parties.

SSL also provides authentication, ensuring that users are communicating with the intended website and not an imposter
