How to Optimise Product Images for SEO

While high-quality visuals help convert browsers into buyers, properly optimised images can also drive valuable traffic from image search results. For eCommerce businesses, especially those with large product catalogues, image SEO should be part of the broader optimisation strategy.

Use Descriptive File Names and Alt Text

Search engines can’t see images, so they rely on file names and alternative (alt) text to understand what an image represents. Avoid generic names like ‘IMG123.jpg‘ and instead use descriptive keywords such as ‘blue-leather-crossbody-bag.jpg.’ The alt text should be brief yet informative, accurately describing the product while naturally incorporating relevant keywords where appropriate.

Compress Without Losing Quality

Large image files can slow down your site’s loading speed, which negatively impacts SEO and user experience. Use compression tools to reduce file sizes without compromising on visual quality. Formats like WebP offer a good balance of quality and performance. Ensuring fast-loading images improves both mobile and desktop experiences, which are key ranking factors.

Include Structured Data Where Relevant

For product pages, implementing schema markup can enhance how images appear in search results. Structured data allows Google to understand more about the product, including its image, price, and availability. This can improve click-through rates by enhancing your listings with rich snippets.
