SEO Terminology Glossary

SEO

Search Engine Optimisation is an overarching term for the techniques used to improve your visibility and rankings on search engines.

On-page / Off-page SEO

These two terms refer to whether the improvements are happening ON your website, or OFF your website. On-page SEO are things like improving alt tags, having good meta descriptions, and using keywords.

Off-page SEO includes things like social media, back-links and reviews. You can find out more about off-page SEO here.

Keywords

Keywords are words or phrases that you wish to target on your website. These are phrases that customers may search for on Google, or questions they may ask that your website might provide answers to.

Keyword Plugins

Keyword / SEO plugins are designed to make the basics of SEO easier to implement. They offer easy boxes to fill in, simple instructions, and ensure you don’t miss any of the pertinent information.

Meta Descriptions

The meta descriptions allow you to summarise your article with a short enticing paragraph. These are often pulled as the summary for search engine results, so it’s important that they are to-the-point and make people want to click through.

No-follow / Do-follow Links

Interlinking between content on your website, and other websites of relevance / trustworthiness is a good idea for SEO. But sometimes you want to be able to indicate to search engines that that links shouldn’t be afforded the same ‘link juice’ or merit. You can then tell search engines not to follow these links with a no-follow tag.

SERPs

SERP stands for Search Engine Results Page – and it is a term you will see a lot once you start exploring your Google Analytics. Your aim is to get your website onto that first page of search engine results!
