Social Media : It’s Not All About Likes And Followers

It is very tempting to get hung up on likes and followers; but if you are a business you should be concentrating on conversions and community – two things that will help small businesses grow!

The emphasis on likes and followers is disproportionate to revenue

Unless you are an influencer, who relies on follower numbers and likes per post to retain sponsorship revenue, you shouldn’t be focussing too much on followers. A lot of followers doesn’t necessarily mean a lot of revenue, so here are a few better ways to look at your social media success.

Here are some better ways to look at social media progress

1. Engagement is a better measurement

The measure of social media has long focussed on ‘likes’ and purely the numbers side of things. But in reality, engagement is a far better metric. It is also more likely to lead to sales, as these people are invested enough to engage.

Instead of counting followers, count engagements!

2. Community is more important than ‘likes’

Creating a VIP space or supportive community online is more indicative of a loyal customer base than ‘likes’ alone. There are two benefits of this – 1. your customers feel special being part of an exclusive group; and 2. you are fostering a community of people interested in your products and services.

A small but supportive community tends to be more lucrative than a large audience with low engagement.

3. Ask yourself ‘is your social media serving you’?

There’s no point in being on a social media platform that doesn’t serve you. If you are investing many hours on instagram (for instance), but aren’t seeing a return of any kind – question whether this is worth that time spend. If your sales are better on Facebook, then focus on that channel. That’s not to say you should abandon Instagram, but perhaps use a scheduler and put in minimal hours instead.
